James Daniel: The Commander Who Marches to His Beat
By Nurudeen Adebayo
James Daniel, with state code KG/24B/1693, recently stood out as the best commander during the parade and drills at the Nysc Says-Kabba camp .
Hailing from Zuru Local Government Area in Kebbi State, his upbringing was shaped by the military—a world he was born into and learned to navigate with pride and discipline.
Both of James’ parents serve or have served in the Nigerian Army; his father, a retired warrant officer, and his mother, who continues to serve, set the foundation for a life built on order, resilience, and focus.
Growing up in a military environment, James was exposed to the rigors of army life early on. His father retired in 2017 after 30 years of service in Abuja, becoming James' greatest role model. “My dad’s experience has been my biggest motivation,” he shared. "He showed me what it means to be disciplined and focused."
A graduate of the Federal University Lafia, where he earned a 2.2 in Economics, James has always had big dreams.
He’s the second of four children in his family, with three brothers and a sister. While his academic journey concluded in December 2023, with his results officially approved in January 2024, his ambitions are far from over.
Though his academic focus is economics, music has always been James' passion. He’s not just a listener but a performer, playing multiple instruments with expertise.
His talents have taken him from his university days to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camp, where he wowed audiences with his trumpet playing. “I’m more into the theoretical part of music,” James explains. “I play multi-instruments, and while I don’t sing, I’ve collaborated with industry gurus.”
Despite his musical abilities, James admits that socializing doesn’t come naturally to him.
"I find it difficult to socialize. I don't really have friends," he says. He describes himself as neither introverted nor extroverted—his behavior changes depending on the situation. However, one constant in his life is his faith; a devout Christian, he abstains from alcohol and stays close to his church roots.
Looking ahead, James hopes to build a career in music. “After NYSC, if jobs aren’t forthcoming, I’ll focus on my music career,” he reveals. Teaching music, playing multiple instruments, and performing are part of his long-term plan.
He’s already earned a certificate in music, along with his degree in economics, and aims to further his education, even if it means sponsoring himself.
At just 29 years old, born on November 16, 1994, James Daniel is a man of many talents, combining military precision with the rhythm of a true musician.
